Has life seemed heavy the past few days? If you’ve been there, or are presently there, I understand completely. We’re believers living in the world, but not of it. That doesn’t mean we don’t feel and experience life just because we are. We too face real-world challenges.
• Our tires go flat just like any owner of a vehicle.
• We can experience sleepless nights just like anyone else.
• We can face disappointments that cause us to wonder, “Why me” or “Not again!”
• We can wonder how our needs will be met this time.
When life happens, we can begin to wonder if God is in control or knows what He is doing. We can even get into performance-based living—afraid to breathe or move because we are afraid we might make a mistake and God will be ready to punish us. He loves us and doesn’t want to harm us, but we can forget that He does. When life seems heavy, God has answers. When I’m not sure of how to respond, He gives me confirmation either in a scripture, word, song, or experience. I too have found myself asking where God is at different times and seasons of my life.
Matthew 11:29-30 is one of my favorite scriptures and one that reassures me:
Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy to bear, and the burden I give you is light (NLT).
What is this “yoke?” In practical terms, a yoke is fastened over two animals and it allows them to pull their load. It’s really fascinating to get into the depth of it more, so I challenge you to dig even deeper. God isn’t comparing us to animals but is saying “I’m here to lighten the load. Partner with me and you will find true rest.”
It’s easy to get laser-focused on the problems to the point they are overwhelming us. We can feel the weight whether physically or emotionally as we continue to ask “What am I supposed to do!” God challenges us in these moments to reach out to Him for help. That is counterintuitive to the way some of us think or behave because we feel “WE” are responsible for making things happen using our strength. He reminds us that there is a better way and that includes partnering with Him to find rest for our souls.
Another one of my go-to scriptures is Psalm 43:5:
Why am I discouraged? Why is my heart so sad? I will put my hope in God! I will praise him again–my Savior and my God (NLT).
Hard days can make us feel discouraged and disturbed. They can make us uneasy and fearful. We can find rest by trusting in God, because He is with us and for us. Nothing has caught Him by surprise. He is the answer and we can look to Him in confidence knowing that He is with us.
Questions of the Week:
What is one area that you are carrying too much physical or emotional weight?
Where do you need to partner with God to give Him the weight?
Feel free to share your responses on today’s blog and I would be honored to send you as a gift “Your Greatest Conversations with God.”
I would like to pray with you and also encourage you. We all have moments where we can become tired or weary, but you are not alone. Be sure to e-mail firstname.lastname@example.org. We are on the journey together.
