I love a great story, don’t you? The songwriter of Count Your Blessings, Johnson Oatman Jr., had a vision to share the gospel through song. Some have noted that while he was not much of a singer, in comparison to his father, he had a love for capturing truth through music. Johson Oatman Jr. could have focused on the gifts he had not been given, but he used his skill to be a blessing to generations of believers. Count Your Blessings serves as a reminder of God’s provision and care for us on a daily basis.

Hear the powerful and melodious truth he penned:

Count your blessings, name them one by one

Count your blessings, see what God has done

Count your blessings, name them one by one

Count your many blessings, see what God has done.

How simple is seems to count your blessings in song, but difficult it is in our daily lives. How can we count our blessings in the midst of turmoil? How can we count our blessings when all seems hopeless? We have equated blessings to things (i.e. Nice cars, nice home, nice careers, etc.) Blessings are things God provides for us out of His goodness. Your life, your family and friends, your health, your peace of mind and hope are all examples of gifts God gives us daily. If we are grateful for the simple things in life, we will realize God is always doing something wonderful in and through our lives. As you express gratitude, you will be able to see from a fresh perspective that invites His joy to invade your day.

The Thanksgiving season resets our mind a bit as we embark on the Advent season. Make sure that you find time daily to be grateful for the blessings you have received. Count your blessings and see what God has done.
